  • Top 10 jobs you can take while traveling

The ideal way to travel is with enough money in your bank account to get you through your trip (and even some extra, if possible), but budget can be a big problem for many potential travelers. So if you are not good at saving up your money for your travel fund, there’s something else you can do to ensure that you don’t end up penniless on the road: work while traveling!

There are lots of short term jobs that can take you to faraway and exotic places. Work 8 hours a day or less, and enjoy the sights for the rest of the day. So here’s a list of the top 10 jobs you can take while traveling.

    1. Tour Guide

The job description for this position includes traveling, can it get better than this? You should be able to speak one or more foreign languages and to know how to talk about your passion: traveling and sightseeing.

    2. English Teacher

If you’re a native speaking of English, you’ll have no trouble finding a position as a teacher in a foreign country. A BA in English is an advantage, but not a requirement. This is an excellent way to get in touch with the local culture.

    3. Au-pair

If you like kids, taking care of them should be a breeze for you. You can live with a family and ‘go native’, and while the pay is not that great, you have room and board and enough time to explore your surroundings.

    4. Writing

Writing about your experience in foreign countries can get money trickling into your bank account if you are skilled with a pen. Submit a few stories to as many travel magazines as you can, and you will start receiving freelance jobs in no time.

    5. Bartender

If the bar/nightclub scene feels like you’re in your element, then you should definitely try your hand at bartending. It’s not an easy job, since the hours are long and the pay is not great, but you can mingle with the locals and get some hefty tips if you’re good at what you do.

    6. Kitchen hand

You don’t have to be a chef to work in a restaurant, if you don’t mind doing the brunt work. Washing dishes, flipping burgers and cleaning will not make you rich, but it can help you meet other travelers and get free lunch every day.

    7. Farm worker

If you don’t mind physical work, you can spend a month or two picking fruit or planting crops. Accommodation is usually covered by the employer, and you can spend your money on sightseeing and day trips.

    8. Volunteering

Lending a helping hand can give you the chance to travel to beautiful places, and to learn about wonderful peoples and cultures.

    9. Yacht Crew

If you don’t have money for a cruise, work for your passage! The work might involve a lot of knot tying and deck washing, but the reward is worth it.

    10. Work at a ski resort

If you are a qualified instructor, then you can easily find jobs at resorts, but you can also work at hotels and chalets if you are not the skiing type.

Here are two more great ideas if you want to spend about 6 months- 1 year abroad in Thailand.

You can do your diving instructor certificate for about $700-$1000 in Thailand. You can then work there as a diving instructor and the resorts will fund your little bungalow. I recommend Koh Tao for this, but any island in Thailand works for this.

Furthermore, I saw many tourists doing this unconventional type of work in Thailand. They would buy an English teacher certificate or English University degree on Khaosan Road and would then travel to Japand to give private lessons. The job pays really well and after a month of hard work, you can spend 3 months months in Thailand. (Disclaimer: You did not read this here and I was not the one posting this :) )

Great article! Doing a bit of work while travelling is a great way to supplement your funds and keep travelling for longer.

If you’re interested in farm work (number 7) and you have a bit of experience or a whole lot of wilingness then let us know. We won’t lie, it’s not exactly a walk in the park but it is a genuine Australian experience and our farm work placements generally pay better than fruit picking jobs.
