They say that nothing beats a home-cooked dinner, but those of us who cannot boast of any culinary talents might disagree. Besides, going out for your meals has nothing to do with cooking abilities, most of the time. As any seasoned restaurant-goer knows, there is something very rewarding about browsing a menu, choosing a great dish that you’ve been dying to try for ages, and abiding by the rules of etiquette while eating with fancy cutlery. Eating at a restaurant can be a very pleasing pastime, especially if the restaurant itself is out of the ordinary. For a special dining experience, here is a list of the most unusual restaurants in the world.

Toilet Restaurant, Taipei, Taiwan

Few of us would associate restrooms with restaurants, but the owners of the Toilet Restaurant in Taipei managed to pull off this idea quite successfully. The decor of this restaurant is exactly what you’d expect – you feel like you’re in a huge communal toilet, but a much more sanitary one.

The chairs are toilet bowls of various colors and shapes, the dishes are shaped like urinals, and even some of the meals look like they are the product of certain excretory functions. If you’re easily grossed out, it’s probably not the place for you.

The Clinic, Singapore

The Singaporeans certainly like their restaurants strange, and this medical-themed restaurant is possibly the strangest of them all. The moment you step into the restaurant you’ll feel like you’re in the lobby of a hospital. It’s not the most pleasant feeling in the world, especially if you have hospital-phobia, but the atmosphere is interesting nonetheless.

The 13 course menu is served on plates that look disturbingly like surgical instruments, the drinks are served in oversized syringes, and the staff are dressed in doctors and nurses.

Ithaa Restaurant, Rangalifinolhu, Maldives

Ithaa Restaurant is the first underwater restaurant in the world, built under the blue waters of the Laccadive Sea. The restaurant can be accessed through a spiral staircase, and it is encased in acrylic panes, and it is so resistant that even the 2004 tsunami caused no damage to the structure. The restaurant is very small (it has only 14 seats), so it is quite exclusive, but dining while looking at sea creatures floating by is an experience that no animal lover should miss.

’s Baggers, Nuremberg, Germany

If waiters are usually the ones who manage to ruin your dinner, then you’ll love this place where modern technology replaces humans. This Nuremberg restaurant is fully automated, and the guests can choose their food from a touchpad menu. The dishes will then be cooked in the kitchen, and delivered to the guests via a conveyor belt. You can even e-mail or sms your order to the chefs.

The Supperclub, San Francisco

Did you know that the ancient Romans enjoyed their meals in bed? And we’re not talking about breakfast, but full course lunches and dinners too. This restaurant (which also has branches in Amsterdam, Istanbul and Singapore) has an amazing menu of gourmet foods, which will be served to the guests while they are lounging on fluffy pillows.

I mean you should insert in this list the bar named “Klo” (www.klo.de) in Berlin, Germany, which means toilette. Quite bizarre, but worth to visit.
