  • Solo travel: the best destinations of 2011

Traveling alone can seem a bit scary, especially if you’re doing it or the first time. Knowing that you have to untangle complicated maps on your own, that you can’t rely on anyone for directions or that you have to eat alone in a restaurant in a completely unknown city sounds a bit dreary. But it all depends on the destination, and if you choose wisely, you will be too busy enjoying your holiday on your own.

Besides, the pros can even outweigh the cons: you can wake up whenever you want, your schedule is completely up to you, and you can see all those interesting sights without listening to the complaints of an uninterested travel companion. So here are the best solo travel destinations of 2011.

    Doha, Quatar

As opposed to similar destinations like Dubai, Doha is much less crowded, it has more beautiful beaches and lots of amazing restaurants. Doha is teeming with cultural activity: the Tribeca Film Festival takes place here, the Museum of Islamic Art is really amazing and it might host the Olympics in 2016. But don’t wait that long to visit it, it is really worth a visit!

    Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio is hardly the most original destination ever, but if you want to find like minded people to hang out with during your holiday, it is perfect. Fun beaches, great weather, amazing culture and cuisine. Also, if you want to be alone but still surrounded by people, Rio won’t disappoint you.

    Stockholm, Sweden

Ever since Stieg Larsson’s books hit the best-selling list, throngs of visitors took Stockholm by assault. The icy Swedish capital can be a bit expensive, but everything that you buy or pay for here is worth every single cent. The main attractions are a must, but there are other, more underrated things to do and see too: take a ride on a reindeer carriage, swim in a restored Art Nouveau pool or visit gourmet markets.

    Hokkaido, Japan

Hokkaido will be everything you didn’t expect in Japan. It is not crowded, there are vast expanses of untainted nature, the cities are not overly futuristic, there are some very nice examples of Asia architecture, and other interesting cultural sights. Besides, in Japan, people travel all the time, so you won’t even stand out (except only if you’re not Asian).

    Kent Coast, England

If you want solitude, peace and quiet, the Kent Coast will be the perfect refuge. Here you can find sandy, windswept beaches, isolated coves and tiny, lively seaside towns with a distinctly English charm. The stretch from Whitstable to Ramsgate, with its colorful beach huts is very nice for a walk, as well as the Viking Coastal Path, a 27 mile rocky walk.
