Prague is one of the oldest and largest cities in Europe, and it is one of the most poplar tourist destinations for visitors from outside of Europe. Whether you are a simple tourist, a backpacker or an international student, you will find lots of things to see and do in this historic city.

But above all, Prague has a bohemian side that any newcomer should explore, especially if you are a coffee/tea addict. So for those looking for some good coffee in the city, here are our picks for the best coffee shops in Prague.

Slavia Coffee Shop

Slavia is one of the landmarks of coffee culture in Prague, and it is one of the oldest surviving coffee shops in the capital. Slavia was opened in 1881,  and for a long time it used to be the meeting place of artists and intellectuals.

Despite having been closed a for a good portion of the 90’s, Slavia was reopened sporting its original art deco look. Slavia is located just in front of the National Theatre, so it is a popular place to grab coffee and cake after a performance.

Cafe Louvre

Many of Prague’s coffee shops used to have an exclusive clientele, but few cafes can outdo the Cafe Louvre. Kafka, Einstein and ?apek have visited this cafe at some point. The bourgeois character of the place did not stand well with the communist regime, so the cafe was closed until 1992.

Today, it is one of the most pleasant and elegant cafes in Prague, where you can have coffee, tea and cakes, but also breakfast, lunch and dinner (including a large variety of vegetarian dishes). The cafe is located on Národní Street.

Café Impérial

Café Impérial can boast of having some of the best coffee in the city, and exceptional service too. The selection of pastries and cakes to accompany your coffee is quite impressive, and the prices are quite reasonable too. The cafe is famous not only for its beautiful art nouveau interior, but also for its doughnut fights, which sadly are not practiced anymore (customers could throw old doughnuts at each other).

Kavárna Obecní d?m

According to many, Kavárna Obecní d?m is decidedly the most beautiful cafe in Prague. This art nouveau marvel offers everything from breakfast to nightcaps, but the strongest point of its menu are the sweets. A small variety of pancakes and ice creams on the menu might not seem like much at the first glance, but they are so delicious that you can never have enough of them.

Cafe Milena

This cafe was opened by the Franc Kafka Society, and it was named after one of Kafka’s lovers, Milena Jesenka. It was opened after the death of the author, but the society intended it as on homage to Kafka.  There’s a nice selection of traditional Czech dishes, and a long and varied list of coffee and coffee specialties. The cafe is located in the Old Town, so the prices are a bit steeper than in the modern part of the city.
