We couldn't have chosen a better way to get around in San Francisco and see a lot of the attractions. The trolleys very easy to figure out. There are three lines marked with different colors (orange, blue and green) and you only have to check on what color line your station is located. We never got lost.

You can buy one ticket or a day-pass (both good for the bus as well), which is very useful if you want to go sightseeing.

Do not get confused, the trolley looks more like a smaller red train, but that's what you are looking for.
