On Rue Gambetta, there is a market called Wazemmes (Marché de Wazemmes), that is opened every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, from morning until 1-2 PM. After the market closes the whole place becomes a parking place. Wazemmes is very big and you can find anything there from fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, specific food (I highly recommend roasted chicken) to clothes, jewelry, cosmetics and even electronics (well, I even found laptops :) ). Prices are in general smaller than in stores, and the quality is rather acceptable (even if I was tricked once when I bought some headsets, on the box the specifications said the cable is 3 m long, but it hardly had 1 meter :( )

  • Lidl Stores - cheap food
For the cheapest store food in Lille, I recommend Lidl stores. They don't shine by modernism or fancy design, but products there are really cheap. The one we used to shop is located on Rue Léon Gambetta and it's open until 8 PM, at least [...]

Lille Travel guide

Prior to the 1960s and the 1970s, the city of Lille was known as an important city for various industries like coal, mining and textiles. But during the 1970s, these industries fell and the city of Lille transformed into a city that supported the service sector.    The city again made news in 1983 when the VAL was opened in the city. This was the world’s first automated mode of transport [...]
