One of the grandest buildings in Havana, the Capitolio looks like a twin-building of the Capitol in Washington, DC, though it is a bit taller and longer than the latter. It's architecture is beautiful and stunning and being such a grand building, you can see it almost from everywhere in the city.

An interesting thing about the building is that inside the main hall, embedded in the floor is a replica of a 24/25-karat diamond. What makes this stone such a valuable piece is that every road that drives out of Havana is measured in distance from this diamond. Pretty amazing! :)

From the entryway you get to the Salon de los Pasos Perdidos ( which means Room of the Lost Steps) which got its name from the room's unusual acoustics. In the middle of the 'salon' stands a 17m tall bronze statue of a Roman Goddess, covered with golden leaves, representing the Statue of the Republic. You shouldn't miss visiting this amazing building!

Havana History

The second idea, which actually boosted Cuba’s importance, was when the Spanish Crown decided to protect its goods by having a fleet of ships travel together across the ocean to Spain.  Therefore, all ships with products had to unite in Havana’s harbor and then leave as one. Once it became officially known as a city in 1592, but King Philip II of Spain thought there was more of a focus to [...]
