I was so amazed when I went to see the famous Greektown district in downtown Detroit last summer. I would have never thought a district such as this could survive for so long. It is said that there were Germans who first established the ‘town’ in the 19th century. There are a lot of statues and historical buildings, some built so that they resemble the Parthenon or other Greek architecture.
Nowadays you can even hear traditional Greek music on the streets. And the food; it is just delicious. We went to the Pegasus Taverna and tried out the acclaimed saganaki (flamed cheese), which was pretty tasty although we feared they would burn down the building with the flames roaring to the ceiling (must be flame-retardant). All in all I really enjoyed it and I would definitely go there again.

Address:
East of the intersection of Gratiot Avenue and Woodward Avenue.

Opening Hours:
The shops and restaurants have separate opening hours; the famous Greektown Casino is open 24/7.

Detroit Travel guide

Founded in 1701, as a trading post for the French to do business with the Chippewa, Detroit began to flourish when Ford Olds, the Chevrolets and the Dodge brothers began to build their automobile empires, thus DETROIT is considered the birthplace of the mass-production car industry and the Motown sound. Though it had serious problems in the past: the July 1967 riot, crimes (so the media considered [...]
