The Fastnacht(or in 'bärndütsch' fasnacht) is one of the bigest event in this muliticultural country, irrespectively of different cantons(regions). This carneval naturally is going out in februar, in each city for from 3 to 5 days, the bigest one is in Basel(the 3th bigest city in Switzerland). The whole parade month is really interesting, because in every city is very diffrent according to each other. In Bern for example the whole parade is more elegant and fancy at the same time in Basel is much bigger chaos. In Bern also the spectator is dressed up in costumes and everybody haveing party together, but in Basel mostly just the band's are dressed up in very interesting and fancy costums, here the spectator is also haveing party's following the one of the hundreds of bands on the streets. The other interesting Swiss carneval tradition is the confetti tossing on the people who are not fully dressed up in costumes(and some times vica-versa), I think if you'll go ever to this event(and you should, because it's fabules) you're better dressed up in some costumes because if not you're hair and clothes will be full of confetti's for days really.
The special music is the major thing on the fastivals in here: In Bern basicly they play just drum and trumpets, at the same time in Basel the basic played by many flutes. Off course by this time the streets are full of special swiss foods vendors. You'll need to try: käse fondue (cheese fondue, verz swiss), swiss hot dog, wiener, toact-in-the-hole, many kind of special sousage's and many kind of special käse, I mean cheese. Come to this event and enjoy Switzerland.
