It was built originally for the emperor Zhu Di and his empresses, holding the name of Changling, than later mausoleums of other 12 emperors and their empresses were built around the main tomb. Interestingly the tomb of the first emperor who was buried here and the last emperor of the Ming dynasty is accessible to the public, the Chang Tomb being the biggest and the most beautiful of the two. The other tomb, Dingling, is underground, the Soul Tower serving as entrance to the chambers.

Leading up to the Chang Tomb is the Sacred Way, a seven kilometer long large pathway, with typical Chinese statues on its sides, each of them symbolizing something. It was said that this path led the way to the Heavens for the emperor and his wives.

The whole place is remarkable and beautiful; a quite big piece of history.
