Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland

- History & Culture travel tip
- City center
It is the most disturbing place I can imagine. Everything is the same as it was once when the places worked as Nazi concentration camps, the gas chambers, the train stations, the barracks. Auschwitz was the smaller one, here 'worked' the famous doctor Mengele who made terrible experiments on Jewish women and children.
Birkenau is a few kilometers away, that was the place for mass destruction. Both of the sites are parts of the UNESCO World Heritage and work as museums and memorials.
The whole place is very cold and you can also see the wooden barracks where hundreds of people lived together. There are also rooms where the personal objects of those who died here are displayed. Thousands of suitcases, hundreds of glasses, tons of human hair, it is something you have never seen before.
Children under 14 are not allowed, but it's perfectly understandable, it would be very heavy for everyone, but it's definitely a must, if you are in the area.
