Shenzhen History, China
Once a small fishing village, Shenzhen was chosen to be the first of the Special Economic Zones in China by Deng Xiaoping, a late Chinese leader. Originally established in 1979, the purpose of the Special Economic Zone was to mix capitalism with socialism and add some Chinese characteristics. The location was specifically chosen to attract investors from Hong Kong, as Shenzhen is relatively close and the two cities share the some culture.
This was immensely successful, and opened up China to continuing economic reform. This is probably one of the most important factors today in the world economy. In fact, the successfulness of Shenzhen led to the creation of more than a dozen similar areas.
Dating back even further, archeologists have found evidence of aborigines as far back as 6700 years ago. The city itself dates back to Shane and Zia dynasties. The name means deep drains, as the area is full of paddy fields. It is now the largest manufacturing base in the entire world and is one of the powerhouse cities of China. The city is well known for manufacturing textiles, pharmaceuticals, processed food, electronics, and chemicals. Shenzhen now has a major airport.
A superhighway was built in 1994 and connects Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The city is also a showcase for some of the most brazen buildings and building projects. It is also the fastest growing city in all of China. Shenzhen is also home to some of China’s largest technological corporations, Huawei and ZTE. Shenzhen is directly across from Hong Kong and is easily accessible.
Since 1990, Shenzhen has focused on tourism to help promote the city. There is incredible shopping and many fabulous restaurants and bars to keep you occupied. This city, even with its rather limited history, has become a metropolis all its own.
