Visiting Gythion, Greece

I was very disappointed to see uncollected garbage piled on many of the city streets of this otherwise pretty city. It smells badly and is a health hazard. Friends who live there told me this has been going on for a long time. There seems there is no community will to do anything about it. One morning I saw a dead cat next to one of these refuse mountains. Later in the afternoon the animals was still there, buzzing with flies. I really can't imagine such a situation going on at long as this one has in anywhere else. It is really boggling. My recommendation is to skip Gythion. Maybe if tourism declines the town fathers will be forced to deal with the garbage problem.
