Strasbourg History

While there is some archaeological evidence that present-day Strasbourg has been inhabited since the stone-age, the first settlement has been founded by a Celtic tribe, who named their village Argentorate. During the Roman occupation of Gaul, Argentorate became Argentoratum, a city in the Roman province of Germania Superior. The city’s historical centre, Grande Ile, dates back to approximately 12 BC.
