Situated just 90 km from Rio and in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Angra dos Reis is most widely known as the gateway to an island paradise. This quaint fishing town is surrounded by 365 islands and over 2,000 beaches, all with their own unique natural beauty. Only venture out a short distance from the coast and you'll discover waterfalls, tropical forests, spectacular mountain views, and pristine coastlines.

Angra dos Reis, meaning King's Cove, was discovered in 1502 by Andre Goncalves, a Spanish explorer, although it wasn't settled until 1556. Since the end of slavery agriculture took a big decline, but is still a source of revenue for this small seaside town. Nowadays tourism and shipbuilding are the main sources of income, with honeymooners and travelers seeking the ultimate vacation in paradise.

Because of the abundance of beautiful islands that dot the Atlantic, Angra do Reis is a great starting point for all types of adventures. Boating and fishing trips are especially popular among tourists and locals. Enjoy a leisurely day on a yacht with a bar, and stop off at beaches for a swim in the clear waters all surrounded by lush jungle.

Some highlights of the region include the Gipoia Island, which is a great place for scuba diving, especially at the beach Ilha de Itanhanga. You can also rappel off one of the massive cannons and catch excellent views from atop the main hill. The Paqueta Island has some of the best seafood restaurants due to the fisherman who supply the docks with fresh fish and seafood. Back on the coast you'll also find excellent beaches. Mambucaba is a great spot to discover the history of the region and the neighboring Brava Beach has the best surf.

Just two hours from Rio is Pestana Angra Resort, a luxurious, quaint piece of paradise with 27 private beach bungalows, is a favorite among honeymooners. All of the bungalows have fantastic seaside views and private balconies. Some accommodations also include personal Jacuzzis and private saunas for an extra treat at the end of fun-filled day of sightseeing and beach hopping. Whether you decide to venture off the grounds or stay relaxing at the resort, you'll find private beaches, ecological trails, and a restaurant and bar, just outside your doorstep.

There are literally thousands of little pieces of paradise that lay just outside of Rio, making the possibilities for travel even more exciting. There are so many places to explore on the expansive coast of Brazil, and Angra dos Reis is a great starting off point to hundreds of tropical islands.

Brasilia Nightlife

If you want something a little more casual and busy, try Cafe Libanus.  This is a busy, but friendly, outdoor café, where people watching can be a full time activity.  When you decide to move onto the club scene consider the following clubs that are suggested as the best for tourists:  Mane das Codornas bar, Estação 109 (109 Station), and Frei Caneca.  At most clubs, the dress code is upscale and very trendy; you’ll find many clubs will not even allow you in if you are wearing jeans or sneakers.  Pack only your most up-to-date clothes when visiting this city. When you begin your evening, you have to keep in mind that most clubs do...
