Heavenly Mountain Resort – Lake Tahoe
One of the most popular among the ski resorts of the area is the Heavenly Mountain Resort, overlooking the clear blue waters of Lake Tahoe. You can choose your preferred trails on this diverse terrain, from very easy to difficult runs recommended to experts only. There are a large number of hotels, inns and lodges to choose from, for all tastes, but probably the amazing rustic inns and restaurants suit the atmosphere best.
There are four terrain parks at Heavenly in total, with about 4,800 acres of skiable territory. The base elevation of the resort starts at 6,565 feet and it rises up to 10,067 feet at the summit. There are no pipes here, but you can choose from 29 different lifts. The ski resort has got 97 runs for every skier. Beginner trails have a 20% elevation while advanced trails have an elevation of 35%.
Apart from ski and snowboard, you can also discover the wilderness of the surrounding forests and mountains on a snowmobile. If you want the ski experience but with less efforts, you can go tubing alone or with your family on the most skiable terrain of Heavenly.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort
Though smaller than Heavenly in every aspect, Kirkwood Mountain Resort offers lots of activities for an absolutely fun vacation. this resort is located in California and has a high base elevation with great trails for beginners and intermediate skiers mostly. Apart from the skiing experience, you can also go on an amazing dog sledge tour, snow shoeing, cross coutry skiing or back-country expeditions.
Base elevation starts at not less than 7,800 feet while summit elevation is at 9,902 feet. The total territory of the resort is 2,300 acres and it has got 65 runs with 14 lifts. Beginner terrain has an elevation of only 12% while the few expert trails are as steep as 38%.
The resort is right next to Kirkwood Mountain Village. It has a snowshoe and cross country center and a large hill exclusively for tubing. If you want something new and different, from the next season you can also book yourself into a zip lining canopy tour on the mountain, above the snow.
Mount Rose – Ski Tahoe
Mount Rose is not only the closest one to the Reno Tahoe International Airport of the Lake Tahoe resorts, but also the one with super extreme terrains – not exclusively. Here you can find the Mount Rose Chutes that are numbered among the longest and steepest slopes on the continent.
Base elevation is high here as well, it is at 7,900 feet, while the summit is at 9,700 feet. There are 8 lifts and over 60 runs on the 1,200 acre terrain of the resort. Beginner trails are 20% elevated while runs for advanced skiers can be up to 50%. Note that this year the ski and stay packages of Mount Rose start from $79 per day.
Northstar California Ski Resort
Across the 3,170 acre terrain you can choose from 97 trails that are served by 20 amazing lifts. The resort has got pipes, seven terrain parks and a terrain difficulty stretching from 13% to 60%.
Northstar California Ski Resort is perfect for those who wan the alpine ski village atmosphere combined with all the luxuries you can imagine and a general laid back style. Sierra at Tahoe Ski Resort has got 14 lifts and 46 trail on its 2,000 acres, out of which 320 acres are back country territory. Base is at 6,640 feet and summit at 8,852 feet. It also has a 100 acre territory especially for beginners with four lifts and the unique Burton Star Wars Experience.
The Squaw Valley – Alpine Meadows ski resort is huge, with a 6,000 acre territory, over 270 ski trails and 42 lifts. As there is much of everything here, you will also find over 60 restaurant, shops, bars and even art galleries in the village.
