As we live in the age of global warming, it’s become more important than ever to protect the environment and preserve what we have left of Mother Nature. Besides, green travel is more than a guilt trip that is too uncomfortable to actually enjoy, quite the opposite.
Green travel can make you feel good about yourself without diminishing the enjoyment of your trip, and it can give you a feel of adventure and maybe even risk. Unfortunately, traditional tourism can take a large toll on the environment, and unless tourists pay more attention to the ‘welfare’ of their destinations, they might disappear soon. So if you want to see the world in an eco-friendly way, here are some tips for green travel.
Green accommodation
Although many people associate green travel with sleeping in a treehouse in Borneo, huddling in a tent in the Rockies, or something along those lines, these are not your only options. Of course, camping and sleeping in a tent of some other low-maintenance accommodation is the most green thing you can do save for sleeping under the open sky, but if you are not prepared to give up on all the comforts of modern life, you can choose a hotel that does its best to be eco-friendly.
Eco-lodges and eco-hotels are increasingly popular nowadays, and increasingly affordable. If you can’t find one, then choose a locally staffed or operated hotel instead of an international chain, it will be more sustainable and help the local economy.
Don’t waste anything
Bring your own toiletries with you when you travel, and if you use the ones provided by the hotel, take them with you and use them up, because they will end up being thrown away anyway. If the tapwater is drinkable at the hotel (you should ask), drink that instead of bottled water, and ask whether your hotel has any recycling programmes for any trash you might end up with. Even if the price of utilities are included in the room rate, turn off the light and the AC when you leave the room.

If you are visiting a location that can be reasonably explored on foot or on bike, do that instead of resorting to public transport. Renting a bike will probably be cheaper than all those bus and tram tickets anyway, and it will be good for your health too.
When your hiking, stay on the marked trail, even if another way seems more alluring – so that you don’t disturb the wildlife or destroy the flora. When scuba diving or snorkeling, don’t touch the corals because they get damaged very easily!
