  • Stockholm on a budget

The historical center of Stockholm !

    The historical center of Stockholm

When you’re traveling to Europe, Stockholm is one of the cities that you definitely have to see. It has the reputation of being rather chilly, but extremely cool (in the metaphorical sense), and unfortunately, a little taxing on the pocket. Visiting Stockholm without an adequate budget seem like insanity, but even if your funds are limited, don’t give up on the idea of a trip to the icy capital of Sweden.

There are several tips and tricks that can help you save some money while you’re there. So prepare yourself to dive into the city’s cosmopolitan allure, because here are some suggestions on how to visit Stockholm on a budget.

The self-titled capital of Scandinavia certainly has plenty of budget haunts, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to find them. On the surface, Stockholm is all class and style, and many of the places you’ll see will seem insanely expensive. So if you don’t want to empty your wallet for a dinner, the hipster part of the town is the best place for you.

    Shopping

It doesn’t matter if you are a hipster or not, these places have just enough (but  not too much) bohemian charm to satisfy even the most picky tourist. Sodermalm, the central ‘island’ of Stockholm, is the most densely populated area in all of Scandinavia, and it has some very interesting and unusual shops and boutiques where you can find cheap and/or vintage clothes.

Some of the shops carry pretty high hefty price tags, but be obstinate and don’t give up until you stumble into a boutique that you can afford. Sodermalm is famous for its shops where you can find unique and handmade things. Fashion addicts and those who are interested in curiosities will definitely love this part of the town.

    Food

Shopping is an expendable part of a trip, however, eating is not. Luckily, you won’t have to stick to supermarket sandwiches when you’re in Stockholm, even if you’re low on cash.

Café String in Sodermalm looks rather trendy and expensive (and it doubles as a furniture shop – you can actually buy the table you’re sitting at!), but their sandwiches are very tasty, if a bit small, and they cost about £3.

The Indian Curry House on Scheelegatan street is one of the cheapest Indian places in the city, and while it is quite small, it is a very fun place and the food is delicious. If you want to eat something more local, keep an eye out for dagens rätt, or daily offer, usually composed of hot drinks, bread, butter, salad and coffee.
