No matter how much time and energy you devote to planning every single detail of your holiday, you can’t make it perfect, and a small dose of unpredictability only makes your trip more interesting anyway.
But still, some planning is necessary to avoid mistakes and mishaps that can positively ruin your entire experience. So here are 10 travel mistakes to avoid when your preparing to travel, or when you’re already on the road, and your holiday will be as enjoyable as possible.
1. Not getting enough insurance
Not getting adequate travel insurance doesn’t sound like a big deal, but although you shouldn’t be paranoid, if you get hurt or sick, you should have enough insurance to deal with it.
2. Planning too much
There’s only so much activity that you can cram into one day or one week, and keep in mind that the point is to enjoy your holiday, not necessarily to dash through as many places as your time allows you. Slow down and enjoy the view!
3. Booking connecting flights to closely
Everyone hates layovers, but even if it seems like you can reduce the waiting time to the next flight to a minimum, allow at least a good couple of hours between the flights – there might be delays, crowds and long queues that take time to battle.
4. Not making reservations
While traveling without a fixed plan sounds great and adventurous, not making reservations is a very bad idea. No one wants to end up looking for hotels late at night, or finding out that they can’t visit their attraction of choice because all seats are booked.
5. Spending too much
You might be tempted to try all those enticing local delicacies and visit more sights that originally planned, but that’s a big no-no when it comes to finances. Make a budget and stick to it.
6. Not making copies of ID and passports
Fact is, you might lose your wallet, someone might steal your wallet, or you might lose your luggage. In case your personal documents go missing, always have copies of them on you, preferably not stored in the same place as the originals.
7. Not checking for holidays
The country or area where you’re traveling to might have some pretty important holidays right when you’re visiting, which means that not only some of the attractions might be closed, but also shops or restaurants.
8. Overpacking
Overly large and heavy luggage is inconvenient and annoying, so don’t pack too much stuff thinking that you might need it. Pack only what you need!

Guidebooks only tell you so much, and it’s not nearly enough if you want to really get into the spirit of things. Talk to other travelers, don’t be shy about interacting with the locals and explore on your own.
10. Not notifying your bank
If your bank notices any ‘unusual’ activity, it might freeze your accounts, and ending up with no money in a foreign place is not a good travel activity or anyone but the most daring travelers.
