Thailand is a land of contrasts, but in a very pleasant way: it is cheap, but you can find anything that you’d expect from a modern country; it is safe, yet you can find a decent dose of adventure if that’s what you want; you can trek though tangled, age-old jungles, and then relax on a lively beach. If you are looking for a travel destination that will make you feel comfortable yet adventurous at the same time, Thailand is the best choice you can make.

It is the most popular tourist destination in south-east Asia, and or good reason. The fascinating Thai culture, cuisine and sights are enough to make even the most hardened traveler happy. Read about the best-known sights and landmarks in Thailand after the jump.

Bangkok

There are enough sights in Thailand’s bustling, colourful capital to keep you busy for weeks on end. Luckily, many of them are located in the Old City, so if your time is limited, this is where you should go. The Grand Palace, where the Thai kings used to live, is the most sought-after landmark in the city.

There are several amazing sights within the palace, for example the Temple of the Emerald Buddha or the Royal Pavillion. The palace is usually thronged with tourists, so the best thing to do is to get an early start (the palace grounds open for visits at 8:30 A.M.). Other than this, there are hundred of beautiful Buddhist temples in Bangkok that are worth a visit: Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Wat Saket and countless others.

Ayutthaya

This city was an ancient capital founded in the 14th century, and consequently became one of the most important trade capitals in Asia. The old city is mostly in ruins, but it is impressive nonetheless. If you are visiting Bangkok, you can easily pop over to Ayutthaya for a day-trip. The sights here are almost exclusively temples and museums. Many of the temples still function, so there is a dress code if you want to enter them.

Pattaya

As opposed to the wealth of cultural attractions found in Bangkok, Pattaya is known for its nightlife. The beaches in Pattaya pale in comparison to Thailand’s other, more popular locations.

To tell the truth, there is not much else to Pattaya except for nightclubs, pubs and restaurants. It is not the best place for a family vacations, but if you want to have fun dancing and eating delicious food, then you should definitely check out Pattaya.

Ko Tao

Regardless of how many beautiful temples and palaces are in Thailand, the majority of tourists flock towards the country’s amazing beaches. Ko Tao, a small island in the western part of the Gulf of Thailand, lives of tourism. If you want to learn scuba diving, there’s no better place for it than Ko Tao. The coral reefs around the island are simply amazing, but the waters are shallow – and in addition to this, Ko Tao is one of the cheapest laces on earth to get your open-water dive certification.
