The primary aim of a trip is to feel the pulse of the country you’re going to. Nevertheless, it takes a lot of time and money to go in a complete circuit of a country and cover all its attractions and landscapes. Most of the people choose to visit only the main landmarks of a country and they say it’s enough to get to know the culture they’re interested in. As far as Germany is concerned, here’s a list marking the must-see places.
Berlin
When arriving in Germany, direct you’re steps towards the capital city of Berlin because it has so much to offer to an eager to know tourist. The Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of peace is situated in the western side of Berlin and represents the most famous German monument in the world. Hence, it’s worth a visit. Moreover, this elegant town is crowded with museums. Therefore, if you’re fond of history or you are just simply curious about the evolution of the German civilization, pay them a visit.
Checkpoint Charlie, a crossing-point marking the old border between the East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War constitutes not only a touristic attraction for those who are keen on history, but a stirring construction that reminds us the tragedy of those who lived in that period of time. Nowadays, tourists may sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee at the Cafe Adler right across the street and have a perfect view of the memorial monument.
Sanssouci Castle
If recreation is what you’re looking for, try to include in your itinerary plan the Sanssouci castle, located near Berlin. This imposing castle was the summer residence of Frederick the Great. A walk in the kingdom gardens of the castle is thought-provoking and unforgettable.
Dresden
In order to have a complete image of the German civilization, go to Dresden, a town situated on the left bank of the river Elbe. You will love this town for its unique beauty: more than half of its area is composed by parks and gardens and in the heart of the town the contemporary architecture is exquisite. Due to the fact that Dresden was the Kings’ of Saxony royal residence for centuries in a row, it was constantly embellished with architectural monuments. Here’s a short list of the main touristic attractions in Dresden: the Zwinger Palace, the Hofkirche, Dresden Cathedral and the Residence Castle. The pedestrian area of the Prager Street it’s a shopping hotspot, the countless cafes and shops of many famous brands being set one next to the other.
Bamberg
Once in the German region Bavaria, stop by the city of Bamberg, a shining example of medieval architecture. When walking down the town’s narrow streets you will feel like living a few centuries ago. Both the flower pots stiffed with red flowers on the window frames of the houses and the cleanliness everywhere reveal the German spirit. In order to feel entirely apart of this culture check out the Schlenkerla, a renowned brewery and tavern and have a pint of smoked beer (Rauchbier) straight from the cask.
Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria
This towering castle, built by King Ludwig and dating back from 1869 is probably the most common destination of tourists coming to Germany for the first time. The explanation is simple: the beautiful castle lies on a rocky hill and it seems extracted from a fairytale. This is probably the reason why W. Disney made one in miniature for Sleeping Beauty. It is interesting to mention that the castle beneficiates of electricity and water systems.
Munich
It is no wander that Munich is a touristic hotspot; after all, here the modern and the traditional architecture go hand in hand. It is not only the perfect geographical position (near the Alps) that favors the city, but the fact that it meets a large range of touristic interests. Firstly, the travelers who seek for enrichment of their culture have the possibility to visit the next sights: the Marienplatz right in the heart of the city, a square dotted by the Old and the New Town Hall. There are many tourists who stop in this medieval square to drink beer and to enjoy freshly fried sausages (wursts) with sweet mustard or simply a pretzel. It is no doubt that the children will go for an apple strudel with vanilla sauce.
Other must-see buildings in Munich are the following churches: the Peterskirche, the Frauenkirche and the Michaelskirche.
Secondly, for those keen on football, the stadium Allianz Arena is a priceless jewel. The headquarters of BMW, the famous car brand is also in Munich. You definitely want to go and admire the permanent exhibition of BMW latest models.
Ocktober Fest
If you happen to be in Germany in September, you don’t want to miss this world-renowned festival. If not, make sure you plan your next trip to Germany this time of the year in order to catch it. In spite of its denomination, this international celebration starts in September and ends in the first day of October. Millions of people gathered from all the corners of the world attend the Ocktober fest every autumn. It is the best opportunity for the Germans to hold fairs, exhibitions and circuses and most importantly to install their famous beer tents. German delicacies are also served.
Germany boasts of many marvelous, modern buildings, medieval castles and eclectic landscapes. However, it is the perfect combination between the famous attractions and the civilized, fun people that makes the difference.
