  • Top Malaysian beaches to visit in 2011

South-East Asia is one of the most diverse regions on the planet, and whichever country you decide to visit, you can expect to find something different. The culture of Malaysia shares some similarities with its neighbors, but it is a unique destination, and often a vacation in a Malaysian beach resort will be less taxing on your wallet than in countries like Thailand or Singapore.

Malaysia has invested a lot in hi-tech, it has very good infrastructure, but it still retains enough of its traditions and customs to make it an amazing destination in any time of the year. So here are the top Malaysian beaches to visit in 2011, whenever you feel like you’re in need in a bit of sun and blue skies.

    Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are a group of ten small islands located about 20 kilometers off the northeastern coast of Malaysia, known for their great natural beauty. They are very popular with budget travelers, mostly because there is cheap (and quite picturesque) accommodation to be found there. The two main islands, Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecir, have amazing white beaches fringed with palm trees, and some great scuba diving and snorkeling spots.

    Langkawi

Lagkawi is one of the most touristy and exciting archipelagos of Malaysia, known also under the name of the Jewel of Kedah. There are 99 islands in Lagkawi, but only two of them are inhabited. Pulau Langkawi is the largest and most populous island, and the one with the most interesting beaches.

Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Burau Bay, Pantai Kok, and Datai Bay are the most popular beaches in Langkawi, and they are all amazing, if different. Head to Pantai Cenang for unending stretches of white sand and coconuts, and to Pantai Kok if you want to see limestone hills behind the beach.

    Redang

Without a doubt, Redang is one of the most popular beach destinations in Malaysia. It is an archipelago, but the most famous island is Redang Island, or Pulau Redang. The island is known for its milky white beaches, beautiful coral reefs filled with tropical fish and luxurious resorts. Snorkeling is a very popular pastime in Redang, and if you’re lucky, you’ll even see some sea-turtles (Redang is a major sea turtle sanctuary).

    Tioman Island

Tioman is one of the most spectacular islands in Malaysia, and despite the fact that it draws huge crowds of tourists, it is relatively unspoiled. It is a very good destination for underwater-enthusiasts who want to spend their holiday exploring the wonders of the deep.

The beaches are small and surrounded by jungle, so sometimes you’ll have the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the local wildlife (just stay away from the aggressive monitor lizards).

    Cherating

Cherating is a great destination even if beaches don’t particularly interest you. There’s a cultural village and a turtle sanctuary too, and the beaches, of course, are absolutely amazing. In addition the interminable, white beaches, there are plenty of accommodation options, great restaurants and waves that will delight any surfer, no matter how picky.
