  • Top cheese regions in the world

If you think that visiting a place because amazing cheese is being produced or marketed there is weird, think again. Cheese, like wine, is one of those little luxuries of modern life that no one should go without. Cheese regions, just like wine regions, are very popular with connoisseurs and amateurs alike.

Buying some delicious gruyere is not the same as actually going to Switzerland and tasting the real stuff right from the horse’s mouth. So if you are committed to a life of cheese admiration, you should definitely consider making a trip to some of the most famous cheese regions in the world.

Since we already mentioned gruyere cheese, it’s only fair that we go into a bit more detail about the region where this sweet, creamy, nutty cheese. Some French cheeses also claimed that name of gruyere, but there is a marked difference between the two. Gruyères is a town in the Fribourg Canton, and even without being the place of birth of the gruyere cheese, it is a charming medieval town and an important tourist destination in the region.

    Auvergne, France

Auvergne is the home of several delicious French cheeses, such as the salers, laguiole, fourme de Montbrison, cantal or the famous bleu d’Auvergne. Auverge has vast green expanses, many lakes, forests, ancient volcanoes and lots of amazing hiking opportunities. There are over 50 castles that you can visit, as well as several spa towns and countless Romanesque churches. Puy-de-dome, one of the departments of Auvergne, is especially worthy of notice.

    Franche-Comté, France

Franche-Comté is not only one of the most prolific cheese regions in France (bleu de Gex, cancoillotte, the eponymous  Comté or the delicious morbier). A drive through Franche-Comté will offer you some amazing vistas, especially in the Ciques region, that is in Cirque de Baume, Cirque du Fer a Cheval or Cirque de Consolation. Baume-les-Dames and Baume-Messieurs are two fascinating villages where you can experience the genuine French joie de vivre.

    Bavaria, Germany

Bavariaregion is the heart of the German cheese production, and many (about 75%) of the most famous German cheeses are produced here, for example Bergkäse, Bavaria Blu and Obatzda. There are plenty of historical towns in Bavaria, as well as castle ruins and historical sites.

Bavaria is also known for its popular ski resorts, which are smaller than the ones on Switzerland and Austria, but also much cheaper. And while on your quest for good cheese, don’t neglect another Bavarian delicacy, the bratwurst in its many incarnations.

    Piedmont, Italy

Italy produces some of the finest cheeses in the world, and it’s difficult to pinpoint only one good cheese region on the peninsula. Piedmont is known or its variety of delicious cheeses, but it isn’t the only such region in the country.

Some of the best known cheeses produced in Piedmont are Gorgonzola, Cevrin di Coazze, Raschera, Taleggio, Grana Padano, Castelmagno, Murianengo (and these are only a few). The picturesque Piedmont is famous not only for its cheese, but also its wine, cuisine and truffles – a real feast!
