Top 5 US destinations for Halloween 2011
Halloween might not be everyone’s favorite holiday (especially if you don’t like sweets and trick-or-treaters), but if you want to get away from home on holiday for whatever reason, there is no shortage of destinations that are just perfect for the creepiest night of the year.
A good scare on Halloween or at least a gloomy or creepy atmosphere are not hard to obtain if you decide to visit one of the top 5 US destinations for Halloween 2011. Whether you’re in the mood for something truly bone chilling or something fun for families, there are countless destinations for Halloween that you can choose from.
Anoka, Minnesota, USA
Anoka is the self-proclaimed Halloween capital of the world, and this small Minnesotan town is certainly doing its best to live up to this title. Anoka was one of the first towns in the US to host a Halloween parade, and the tradition continued to this day with not one, but several parades and festivities, haunted houses and jack o’lantern contests.
Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is a historic city with lots of legends and stories up its sleeve, many of them originating in facts. Parts of the historic areas of the city were built on top of old cemeteries, so it’s no surprise that Halloween is celebrated in style.
In addition to locals going pub crawling in costumes, there are ghost tours in old houses, or the option of a stroll in the creepy Bonaventure Cemetery.
Tombstone, Arizona
With a name like this, it’s no surprise that the town of Tombstone is a hotbed for supposed paranormal activity. An infamous gunfight took place in Tombstone in 1881 just before Halloween, which is how many of the town’s ghosts were ‘born’. You can don a cowboy costume and walk the streets of the town, and who knows, perhaps you’ll run into the ghost of some old cowboy too.
Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Some people claim that Eastern State Penitentiary is one of the most haunted places in the US, and even if that’s not true, this former Gothic looking prison is certainly not the jolliest place in the world.
Eastern State Pen is scary, but unless you are really brave, you can join one of the ghost tours visiting the place on Halloween night.
Salem, Massachusetts
Salem of the witch trial fame is a great destination for anyone with an inclination for macabre history, and even more so on Halloween. There are pumpkin carving contests, a parade, blessings and all manner or scary and fun events that appeal to all ages.
