Practical reasons aside, lakes are not bad places to live near, but even if you are not living next door to a lake, you can still make them the object of a trip. Lake shores are great for camping, provided that you know how to deal with mosquitoes, and many lakes are great for swimming, boating and fishing.
Great lakes can be found not only above the ground, but under it too. Underground lakes and rivers are crisscrossing the planet wherever you go, but not all of them are safe to visit or have something interesting about them. But if lakes in caves sound like your cup of tea, here are the top 5 underground lakes in the world.
Melissani Lake, Melissani Cave, Kefalonia, Greece
Melissani Cave has been known to people for a long time, but the lake in the cave has been discovered only in the 1950’s, when the roof of the cave collapsed after an earthquake. When the sun is directly over the lake, the water looks incredibly blue, and this is the best time of the day for rowing a boat out on the lake.
Dream Lake, Luray Caverns, Virginia, US

Dream Lake has an appropriate name, because it looks completely unreal. Dream Lake is the largest lake in the caverns, but it is very shallow – only about 20 inches at its deepest.
The lake is surrounded by beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, which are reflected in the sparkling surface of the lake.
Cheddar Gorge Caves, Somerset, UK
Cheddar Gorge is considered to be one of the greatest natural wonders of Britain,but is is also famous for a 9000 years old human skeleton found in the caves.
There are two show caves in Cheddar Gorge, Cox’s Cave and Gough’s Cave. Cox’s cave has several mirror pools that are so clear that it’s almost too difficult to see the where the reflection ends and the cave begins.
Saint-Léonard underground lake, Valais, Switzerland
Saint-Léonard is the largest underground lake in Europe and it was discovered in the early 1940’s and was opened to the public soon after its discovery. In the past, the water levels were much higher, but they dropped a great deal after an earthquake opened fissures in the cave. Although the visit to the lake is quite short, the lake is absolutely beautiful.
