itachan in Travel Planning | NO COMMENTSTop 5 tourist attractions in Cambodia
Cambodia has everything it needs to be successful: natural beauty, interesting and unique culture, pleasant tropical climate, but luck hasn’t really been on its side for the past five centuries or so. However, nowadays its luck seems to be turning around, and Cambodia is getting back on its feet, partly because of tourism.
The country’s magnificent temples and pristine beaches are attracting more visitors than ever before, and there are lots of ‘undiscovered’ places that appeal to adventurers and backpackers. So if you are planning on visiting this amazing country, here are the top 5 tourist attractions in Cambodia.
Koh Ker
Although the Angkor Archaeological Park is the major destination for temples and ruins, there are many other underrated destinations which are equally interesting.
Koh Ker, for example, used to be the capital of the Khmer Empire for a couple of decades in the 10th century, and during this period some very impressive structures and spectacular statues.
Kampong Cham
For many people, Kampong Cham is just a stop on the way to some other destination, but the third largest city in Cambodia is not devoid of charm at all.
Kampong Cham is not as touristy as Phnom Penh, but it has the same type of colonial charm, just quieter. The city has a laid-back, quaint atmosphere and there are lots of attractions in and around the city.
Banlung
Although Banlung is a rather small town, it is the capital of Ratanakiri province, and home to no less than twelve ethnic groups. Since it is a bit isolated, Banlung has an ‘undiscovered’ feel and plenty to show if you are interested in Cambodia’s culture.
Also, the town is very close to some truly amazing natural attractions, such as Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake, several waterfalls and Virachey National Park.
Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s premier seaside resort, and a wonderful place to visit if you want to lounge around on paradise-like beaches, as well as visit some cultural and historical attractions.
The best beaches in the country can be found around Sihanoukville, but you can also visit Kampong Pier Nup Lok (the old fishing port), Ream National Park, Bamboo Island and Monkey Island.
