    Besalu

Sometimes Spain seems like one gigantic tourist destination that has something to visit at every corner (and everyone knows where every corner is). But there are some secrets left to this country, and plenty of destinations that not everyone knows about.

It takes some digging to find them, and you might know precious little about these destinations until you get there, but once you do get there, you’ll never want to leave the cycle of siesta, fiesta and sightseeing. Here are the top 10 Spanish hideaways that you can retreat to on your holiday.

    Besalu, Catalonia

The small town of Besalu in Catalonia was much more important in the Middle Ages than nowadays – it was actually the capital of Besalu province. Back in those times, some colorful people were associated with Besalu, such as Wilfred the Hairy, Count of Besalu, and Raimon Vidal, a medieval troubadour.

One of the best features of the town is the 12th century stone bridge over River Fluvia, and the Church of San Pere, consecrated in 1003. Besalu is one of those tiny towns that you can wander through on foot and marvel at its historical beauty.

    Zafra, Extremadura

Some say that the sharp architectural angles of Zafra make it look like a Picasso painting, but that’s perhaps due to the number of Roman villas around the town. Zafra is one of the oldest settlements in Spain, so it is practically infused with history and culture.

There are several festivals held in Zafra, most notably the De la luna al fuego festival in June, or less than savory sounding events like the Festival of Fat (it’s actually a festival for pork products).

    Mijas, Andalusia

If you want to live the authentic Spanish beach life, Costa del Sol, the Coast of the Sun, is the best place to go. The region is ripe with charming coastal towns and villages, and Mijas is one the most beautiful ones.

Mijas is a typical white-washed Andalusian village, but it also has the biggest golf resort in Spain. However, if you don’t want to be bothered, there are plenty of quiet places in the village, and besides, the beach is very close.

    Santillana del Mar

Sartre, the not very happy French philosopher said that Santillana is the prettiest village in Spain, so you can rest assured that what you’ll find here will be as picturesque as it can get. The village has a lazy, medieval feel, and it is located very close to the amazing Altamira Caves where you can see some prehistoric art.

    San Sebastian

San Sebastian is very close to Pamplona, but it is a wonderful destination in its own right. In addition to the typically Basque village (which has a great nightlife and tapas places, by the way), you get to see one of the most beautiful natural bays in Spain: a sandy semi-circular beach, a rocky island protecting the bay, and the mountains in the backdrop.
