  • Top 5 modern ruins for urban explorers

The fact that we know out planet pretty well by now (although not entirely), can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your sense of adventure. If you have the time and the money, and you know where you want to go, you can travel anywhere on the map, which is definitely a good thing. On the downside, however, some people could argue that much of the mystery is gone, and trips are no longer journeys of exploration that can lead you to unknown places.

But if you fancy yourself a modern Indiana Jones, don’t despair yet – there are modern ruins for you to see and explore, and with a bit of imagination they are mysterious enough to satisfy even the most cynic traveler. So here are top 5 modern ruins for urban explorers:

    Spreepark, Berlin, Germany

The Spreepark used to be an immensely popular amusement park in the 70s and 80’s, but after the reunification of Germany, business became rather slow.

The park closed in 2002, and the owners left the country following some scandals, but there is (a tiny bit of) hope for the park yet. It is closed to the public except if you join a tour of the park, which will cost you 15 euro.

    Gagra, Georgia

Up until the beginning of the 1990s, Gagra was a thriving resort town at the Black Sea, but following the Abhkazian war it was mostly abandoned by its inhabitants due to the unstable political climate. Nowadays, people are slowly returning to the town, but it is a wold apart from the prosperous holiday resort it used to be.

Derelict amusement parks are really not that amusing, but Splash Down Dunes is possibly the most depressing water park in the world. Although the park seemed to be quite fun in the past, it shut down about two years ago and it is now home to only some deers and the abandoned rides.

    Nara Dreamland, Nara, Japan

Nara Dreamland, a park that was inspired by the California Disneyland, closed permanently in 2006, but it is still a popular destination with haikyo fans, or urban explorers.

The park looks like a something out of an animation film by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, that is, sweet but occasionally creepy.

    Centralia, Pennsylvania, USA

Pennsylvania is a goldmine for urban explorers, thanks to its stash of various ghost towns and abandoned hospitals and theme parks. But Centralia, a mining ghost town,  is probably one of the strangest destination for urban explorers, thanks to its inextinguishable underground fires and the smoke coming out of the cracks in the roads.
