Top 5 little known island nations in the world
Australia, New Zealand or Japan are some of the most well known island nations on the planet, and they are large, easily found on the map, and known to everyone. But for every famous island country, there are dozens of others that are less talked about in geography classes, and maybe even in traveler circles.
Living in a country that is made up of sometimes tens or hundreds of tiny little islands is surely interesting, and visiting them and exploring them at your leisure is even more so. So here are the top 5 little known island nations in the world.
Cape Verde
Cape Verde is made up of 10 main islands and 8 small islets scattered 500 km off the coast of Senegal, in West Africa. Until the 15th century, the islands were uninhabited, but after being colonized by the Portuguese, they became a center of slave trade and coal mining industry.
The history of the country doesn’t make it sound like a particularly pleasant destination, but there is much to recommend Cape Verde – great hiking spots (on Sait Antao island, for example), beautiful beaches (on Sal and Boa Vista), remote island paradises and great seafood.
East Timor
East Timor is based on part of the island of Timor in the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago, and it also includes the small islands of Atauro and Jaco. Tourists in East Timor are not an everyday sight, since many people avoid the country because of its poor infrastructure.
But for a backpacker/adventurer, East Timor is an unexplored paradise, where you can amble from village to village, hike, and visit colonial historical sights.
Palau
Geographically part of Micronesia, Palau was first known to the Europeans who got shipwrecked on the islands (otherwise they might not have even discovered it). The islands belonged to Spain, UK and Germany before finally becoming independent in 1994. Palau has some absolutely amazing scuba diving spots, the most famous of which, Blue Corner, is infamous for its shark infestation and strong currents 😀
Tuvalu
Tuvalu is a tiny country spread over a few islands, in fact, it is the fourth smallest in the world. With only about 10,000 inhabitants in total, Tuvalu is a destination for those who would like to get away from the crowds.
Tuvaluan culture is extremely rich, and you get plenty of opportunities to discover it: traditional dance performances, craft markets, and a very interesting national sport called te ano.
