  • Top 5 islands for pirate fans

Pirate films and pirate fiction are insanely popular now, and so are ‘pirate-flavored’ destinations! Pirate themed cruises are yet to be launched, but surely it’s just a matter of time. Until then, there are plenty of piratey islands where you can live out your fascination with swashbuckling, pillaging and sailing.

Those islands where films like Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed are very much real, and some of them actually have a history of being pirate-dens. So for tourists who want to embrace their inner pirate, here are the top 5 islands for pirate fans.

    Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

This island nation has some magnificent beach landscapes, so it is not surprising that it was the places where parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie were filmed – more specifically, this is were Port Royal of the film was set.

Saint Vincent is not a very touristy place, but that’s just part of its charm. The tropical climate and the mountainous, volcanic landscape makes it the perfect hideaway (for potential pirates or tourists!).

    Bahamas

The 700 islands and islets which make up the Bahamas have a rich history of piracy, and famous pirate captains like Calico Jack, Blackbeard and Captain Henry Morgan were frequently looking or trouble on these islands. Ships sank on the coast of the islands, and battles between pirates and the navy took place rather often, and some say there are treasures buried on the islands even now (although nobody has found any yet).

    Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

Virgin Gorda is a jolly good place for a relaxing holiday, given its tropical climate and nice resorts. But this island has a history of being the hiding place of such infamous characters as Captain Kidd or Blackbeard.

Privateers from around the world ruled the island until chased away by the British navy. The coves and anchorages tucked away on the islands coastline were perfect places for pirate mischief, but now they are great for some sunbathing and swimming.

    Roatan, Honduras

Today, Roatan is a pleasant and quiet scuba diving destination, but it has quite an exciting history. Pirates on the run used it as a convenient little hiding place, and in the 17th century, there were hundreds of pirates on the island, including Henry Morgan, whose treasure is still said to be buried somewhere on Roatan.

    Blanquilla, Venezuela

The island of Blanquilla, in the southeastern region of the Mediterranean, is a popular destination for divers, and it has some impressively white beaches (this is where its name comes from, actually). The island used to be a retreat for pirates on the run from the law, like by the pirate Captain Lowther.
