tomtum in Travel Planning | NO COMMENTSTop 5 eco friendly cities in the world
We live in a world where pollution is an increasingly serious problem, and at the same time traveling in one’s free time is also far more widespread then in the past thanks to the development of new technologies that allow people to go from one place to another quicker and more safely.
Luckily, traveling doesn’t necessarily mean more pollution, and there are lots of ways to decrease your carbon footprint and to protect the environment as much as possible. For starters, you could pick travel destinations that are a little bit more concerned with being green than usual – so here are top 5 eco-friendly cities in the world.
Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik’s public transport is well on the green track, seeing as the city authorities have installed hydrogen buses in the Icelandic capital. Heat and electrical power both come from geothermal sources, so you will be traveling green pretty much whatever you do and wherever you stay in the city. It is estimated that in about 40 years the city will no longer have to use fossil fuel.
Curitiba, Brazil
The capital of the Brazilian state or Parana has a nice historical center, a beautiful botanical garden and a very eco-friendly public transport system, in addition to having an ‘urban sheep’ programme: a herd of sheep that are moved from park to park in order to trim the city’s lawns.
Copehagen, Denmark
Copenhagen’s power comes mostly from a huge wind farm just next to the city, and the inhabitants of the city are more into cycling than using the public transit system.
A new metro station was opened a decade ago in order to convince people to give up on driving. Besides, Copenhagen is a great destination even if you completely disregard its ‘greenness”!
Sydney, Australia
Although it might seem that it’s more difficult for very large cities to be eco-friendly, Sydney proves otherwise. Earth hour, the one hour blackout designed to raise awareness about global warming, was started in Sydney, and the city also has some great waste disposal programmes and lots of green spaces.
