Once a travel destination becomes famous, nothing guarantees that it will stay like that for ever. Lots of places that used to be all the hype a couple of decades ago have been forgotten, some because they ran out of fashion, others because they did not develop as much as other destinations. But some of these ex-popular spots have been unjustly neglected by tourists, and they are now demanding their dues. So next time you plan your vacation, why not take a look at some of these top 5 destinations that used to be popular (and should be again)?

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is not entirely forgotten, but it has lost much of its popularity in the last decade or so. Fort Lauderdale started out as one of the most popular Spring break destinations in the coutry, and hordes of tired students flocked to its beaches after their midterms.

Nowadays, Fort Lauderdale’s explosive nightlife has calmed down considerably, but it is still the perfect vacation spot for someone who like quieter places with stylish restaurants and other nice venues.

Reno, Nevada

For a city that is so close to Sin City, is it any surprise that Reno is no longer the most popular gambling destination in Nevada? Many people who are off to tempt their luck head to Vegas, forgetting that Reno is just as good a destination.

Reno is somewhat more rugged than Vegas, and some of its areas look downright shabby, but it is still a great place to squander your savings.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

The Poconos was already a popular getaway destination in the 19th century, and in our age it was known to be a romantic destination for couples. It was even called the honeymoon capital of the world, but since the opening of larger and fancier resorts, it started to be neglected. Still, the area has many great hiking trails, golf courses, resorts and even a huge indoor water park.

Acapulco, Mexico

Forget Cancun, in the 50’s, Acapulco was the darling of sun-starved travelers heading to the coasts of Mexico. However, competition in the guise of Cozumel and Cancun quickly stole away many of Acapulco’s regulars.

The resorts that used to be popular in the past are still there, and efforts have been made to restore the city to its lost glory. Plus, it’s cheaper than some of the  more popular destinations in Mexico.

Lake Placid, California

Lake Placid in Adirondacks had is glory days in the 1980’s, and it even hosted an edition of the Winter Olympics. The town is an year-round resort, and it can only be called charming – a great destination for families or groups looking for some wholesome fun in the middle of nature.
