I’m sure that everyone has fantasized at some point of their lives about living in a vast castle, being waited on hand and foot and generally being treated like royalty. And while not everyone can afford to buy a castle (with the exception of celebrities), now it is possible to spend a few nights in a castle-turned-hotel, and imagine for a little while that you’re the mistress or master of a beautiful, ancient castle. So start saving up, and spend an unforgettable holiday at one of these fancy castle-hotels on our top five list.
Thornbury Castle, Bristol
Thornbury Castle looks just like what everyone imagines castles to be: majestic, glamorous and full of precious furniture and art. You can almost picture yourself as some aristocrat come to spend the summer at their country castle, or to pay their respects at the court.
The bedchambers are magnificent and manage to capture the historic atmosphere of the place while being the peak of modern comfort. Thankfully, you won’t be treated to any 18th century meals at the hotel restaurant – everything on the menu is adapted to modern tastes.
Lumley Castle, Durham
Lumley Castle is over 600 years old, and no matter how you look at it, it is one of the most interesting attractions in County Durham. The ages of chivalry might be long past, but at Lumley Castle it feels like an armored knight on a horse might appear in almost any second. Durham County Cricket Grounds are near the castle, and the surrounding parklands extend as far as the beautiful River Wear.
Forter Castle, Scotland
Forter Castle is one of the most unique Scottish castles you can find in the Highlands, and it is surrounded by the amazing scenery of rolling hills covered in heath. It was built in the 16th century, and while the outside of the castle was renovated so as to preserved its original look, the rooms are furnished to as to satisfy even the most persnickety guest.
The castle used to be a fortified tower, and while it was almost completely destroyed in the 17th century, it has regained even more than its former glory.
Amberley Castle, West Sussex
Amberley Castle, tucked away in the charming village of Amberley in Sussex, is one of the finest castles in England and it can boast of a rich and fascinating history. The castle was built at the beginning of the 12th century by Henry I, and has been used by many of the country’s kings and queens.
The castle has only 19 rooms and suites, so it might be advisable to book well in advance. What makes this hotel special is the unique character of each beautifully furnished room; despite the surprising historical accuracy, the rooms are equipped with modern facilities.

Hazalewood Castle is quite exclusive, but it is also one of the most luxurious castle hotels in the country. On theoutside it looks like the perfect Norman Castle (it was even mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086), but on the inside it is a den of luxury and delight.
The interior is perhaps not as historic as in other similar castles, but it is tastefully decorated in a classic style which its the building quite well.
