If you are a Buddhist or if you are interested in the religion, you don’t need that many reasons to plan a visit to some of the most amazing Buddhist temples in Asia. Buddhist temples, with their distinctive architecture, are some of the most intricate and masterful buildings in the world. As Buddhism is one of the main religions on much of Asia, there are many styles of Buddhist temples, each with their quirks and distinctive features, so here are the top 5 Buddhist temples in Asia.
Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan
The now famous Tiger’s Nest monastery and temple in Bhutan is a work of art in terms of architecture, but what makes it so unusual is its location – perched precariously on top of a high cliff.
The temple is the most sacred site in Bhutan, and access to it is limited to practicing Buddhists on religious retreats, but it can be admired from a distance in any case.
Borobudur, Java, Indonesia
The stunning temple Mahayana Buddhist temple complex of Borobudur in central Java dates back to the 9th century CE, but even now it is a site of pilgrimage for practicing Buddhists, who climb to the top of the monument through a circular path leading to a stupa surrounded by around 70 Buddha statues. The intricate carved details on the buildings have survived the passage of time, and they are breath-taking even now.
Kinkaku-ji Temple, Kyoto, Japan
Kinkaku-ji temple, also called the Golden Pavilion, was the villa of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and after the shogun’s death, his son converted it into a Zen Buddhist temple.
The temple gets its name from the golden leaf decorating its exterior, which was lavish even by the standards of the past. The present structure dates back to the 1950’s, and it is a perfect copy of the original.
Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, Myanmar
The golden dome of the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is the most sacred religious site for Buddhists in Myanmar. Legends say that the temple is over two thousand years old, but archaeologists found out that it was probably built around the 6th century CE. The gilding on the structure is made of genuine gold plates.
