  • Top 5 beaches in the Balearic Islands

    La Calobra beach

Ibiza and Mallorca are surely well known for travelers who have spent some summer weeks in Europe, but perhaps it is less known that these two European beach paradises are part of a little group of very neat islands: the Balearic Islands.

This Mediterranean archipelago consists of Mallorca, its largest island, followed by Minorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera, which is actually the largest island in a tiny but beautiful archipelago. With so many islands in one place, you can imagine that the archipelago has more than a few great beaches, so here are the top 5 beaches in the Balearic Islands.

    La Calobra Beach, Mallorca

This sandy beach might be a bit difficult to find (so buy a good map or ask some locals), but the experience will be more than worth it. La Calobra is located between Fornalutx and Pollenca, at the mouths if rivers Lluch and Gorg Blau. The water is crystal clear and the scenery breath-taking. After a good sunbathing session, take a walk up one of the rivers for some more picturesque sights.

    Cala Macarelleta, Minorca

This quiet cove is difficult to access (you have to walk, or come by boat), but on the upside, there are very few people on the beach, most of the time. Cala Macarelleta is located in the southern part of Minorca, not far from the town of Cala Macarella. It is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire island.

    Atlantis, Ibiza

Ibiza is booming with tourists during summer, but despite the hordes of visitors, there are a few places on the island that are being kept secret by the locals (and even by some of the visitors).

One such mysterious places in a cove called Atlantis, which doesn’t appear on maps, and unless you manage to find it on your own (or wheedle the information out of a local), you’ll have a very difficult time finding it. Some say that Atlantis can be seen from the watchtower of Torre des Cap des Jueu, overlooking Es Vedra.

    Playa Llevant, Formentera

Playa Llevant is much quieter than many of the other beaches on Formentera, which is strange seeing as it is quite long and broad. The only drawback of the beach is that it can get very windy, and the waves in the water rather large. Other than that, you can enjoy the sand dunes, the scenery and the peace and quiet.

    Cala Banyalbufar, Mallorca

Banyalbufa is a small town of little over 500 inhabitants, with a very distinctive scenery. The cove is located below the small town, which is perched atop some steep cliffs.

The beach is not very long, but it is covered in small pebbles that look lovely in the sun, the water is crystal clear and there are few visitors around.
