The next installment of our series of posts about the absolute top ten sights on each continent will probably offend geography purists, but given the sheer size of the Asian continent, coming up with only 10 attractions is a difficult task. So instead, this post will present the best sights in each part of Asia.
South Asia is still a pretty big place, and there are far more interesting attractions beyond those that made the list. So, in no particular order, here are the tourist destinations that should feature on anyone’s list of things to see in South Asia.
1. Sundarbans, Bangladesh
While Bangladesh is full of cultural and historical attractions, it’s this natural wonder that takes the cake when it comes to the top Bangladeshi sights. Sunderbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world, and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. The richness of the flora and fauna in the region is beyond any nature-lover’s expectations, and there are several spots where you can observe various animals and plants, for example Tin Kona Island, Hiron Point or Katka.
2. Taktsang Monastery, Bhutan
Taktsang Monastery is one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the world, but not only that, it is also one of the most beautiful and inaccessible. The temple is perched on a 1200 meter high cliff, so it might take a bit of effort to reach the top, but it is completely worth it.
3. Agra, India

The Taj Mahal in Agra is one of those sights that everybody knows about, but there are plenty more things to see in Agra, like the 16th century Agra Fort, Swami Bagh gardens and a great number of incredibly beautiful temples.
4. Male, Maldives
The Maldives are known mainly as a holiday destination for beach-goers, and the countless little islands offer plenty of opportunities for sunbathing, swimming and scuba diving, but in Male there are some interesting cultural attractions that will appeal to those who would like to discover the local culture.
5. Swayambhu , Kathmandu, Nepal

If you like adventure travel, trekking and hiking, the entire country will seem like a dream come true to you. Nepalese culture is just as interesting the landscape, and cultural attractions like the amazing Swayambhu stupa in Kathmandu are definitely worth seeing.
6. Swat Valley, Pakistan
Pakistan is full of places that are very interesting from a cultural or historic point of view, but unfortunately visitors need special permits to see them in many cases. When it comes to natural scenery, there are many places that are not restricted to tourists, for example Swat Valley, where the alpine landscape is dotted with ruined stupas and monasteries.
7. Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka
Anuradhapura is an ancient city which is almost 3000 years old, and there are countless archaeological sites and ruins that can be visited. The Citadel with its walls is a must see, as well as Bodhi Tree Temple, the second most sacred site in the country.

Bago has a very rich cultural heritage, and there are many Buddhist sites that are worth seeing, like Shwemawdaw Paya. Some places of interest are outside the city, but close enough that they can be visited if you rent a car or take a cab.
9. Bandhavgarh National Park, India
Bandhavgarh National Park has the highest density of tigers in India, and it you want to see these animals in their natural habitat, this is the place to go (although it is not advisable to explore the park on your own, for obvious reasons).
10. Lampi Island, Myanmar
Lampi Island is one of the few truly unspoiled place on the planet, where you can go to enjoy nature and not much else. The mangrove rivers, pristine beaches and virgin forests of the island are the perfect setting for a bit of ecotourism.
