I know that there are still three months left before Christmas, but it’s never too soon to organize the perfect holiday, right? There are a lot of things to take care of, for example booking plane tickets, accommodation, thinking about who to go with (family, friends, or only a romantic holiday for two?), and the most important decision of them all: where to go.

Christmas (or Hanukkah, or whatever it is that you’re celebrating at the end of the year) is the most important holiday ever, because after months of hard work you finally get to relax and enjoy yourself. So let’s start planning already, and to help you, here are the hottest Christmas destinations for 2010.

1. Scandinavia

If you ask me, a white Christmas is always the best Christmas, and if you want to make sure that you’ll get your fair share of fluffy snow, there’s no better place to celebrate than somewhere up in the north (especially with all this global warming and all). I suggest a nice getaway to Stockholm, where the holiday atmosphere starts well before Christmas.

I like my holidays lively and vibrant, and you can get all of that in Stockholm, where people from all around the world come together to celebrate Christmas, but any nice Scandinavian city will work just as well.

2. Morocco

Not a traditional Christmas destination, but if you ask me, any excuse to visit Morocco is a great in my book. A Christmas without many Christmas trees and fairy lights, but full of the aroma of spices, the warmth of the sun and friendly people, amidst a fascinating culture.

3. England

Want a traditional English Christmas, with yummy Christmas pudding (so much better than the stuff you get at the supermarket), mulled wine, a Christmas log, and jolly carols?

London is a fine choice, although if you are on a budget you should look at a smaller city or town (how about Brighton, for example?). Look for a traditional inn, it will be a lot cozier than at a large hotel.

4. Bali

If you want a sunny Christmas, then you can take your pick of a wide range of lovely tropical islands, where you will be able to drink your pina colada while lounging in the beach. Christmas is about the atmosphere, after all, and you can create that for yourself wherever you are. So how about spending the last days of December in the tropical tranquility of Bali?

5. Bethlehem

With all the running about after presents and worrying about decorations, it can be difficult to remember the spiritual meaning of Christmas. If that is what you would like to focus on this year, rather on the material side of the holiday, how about a pilgrimage to the birthplace of Jesus? Besides the sightseeing, you can also replenish your spiritual energies for the year to come.

6. Baltimore, Maryland

Let yourself be dazzled by the myriad of sparkling Christmas lights in Baltimore, the uncrowned queen of Christmas decorations. All jokes aside, Baltimore really has a flair for doing itself up during holidays, as proved by not only the electrical decorations, but also colonial style Christmas ornaments too. Admiral Fell Inn is a richly historical place, where you can enjoy a truly special Christmas.

7. Chicago, Illinois

For those who like their Christmases not only snowy, but also cold, we recommend a getaway to Chicago. You can have your fill of skating rinks, snowy parks and mulled wine, lights and and an all around festive atmosphere. It seem like all of Chicago’s major landmarks are competing for the ‘most sparkling’ title around Christmas. Besides, the giant Christmas tree at Macy’s Department store is legendary.

8. Lapland

Yes, it sounds a bit cheesy to go to Lapland at Christmas, but if you have kids, they will adore it (and so will you!). Who hasn’t dreamed of meeting Santa Claus when they were little? Lapland tours might be a bit pricey, but lots of travel agencies are organizing tours, and if you book early you might be surprised to find some discount offers.

9. Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City might have got some bad press lately, but fact is that the people there sure know how to celebrate. The Navidad is a time reserved to enjoy the company of family and friends, giving gifts, and having some crazy fiestas. The entire city is transformed into a sea of colorful lights until well after New Years.

10. Vienna, Austria

I have to confess that I have a soft spot for Vienna, but the Christmas atmosphere in this city is one of the most amazing on the planet. If you can get there a week or so before Christmas, you’ll be absolutely amazed at the variety of presents you can buy at the omnipresent Christkindlmärkte, or Christmas markets. Traditionally Christmas is reserved for the family in Austria, but there are more than enough parties too.
