Top beautiful but underrated cities in Europe
When someone comes to Europe for the first time, they tend to visit the most popular destinations on the continent, especially when it comes to cosmopolitan cities like London, Paris, Vienna or Rome. However, there are many more places that deserve a tourist’s attention in Europe, and some of them don’t quite get as much hype as they deserve.
Some of top beautiful but underrated cities in Europe are also some of the most interesting and lively, and often they are also much more affordable than the destinations that tend to dominate tourist brochures. So if you want to see the hidden, unjustly under-appreciated side of Europe, here are some interesting destinations for you.
Lyon, France
Although Lyon, with all its suburbs, it the second largest metropolitan area in France, it is definitely less well known as a travel destination. While tourists heading to the south of France often prefer other destinations, there is a lot to see in Lyon.
The city is famous for its architecture, its famous opera house, many museums and great nightlife. Also, Lyon is the food capital of Europe, where there are more Michelin starred restaurants then anywhere else, and where some of the best chefs in Europe work.
Bruges, Belgium
If it wasn’t also the title of a fairly famous Hollywood movie, most people probably wouldn’t have heard of Bruges. However, this beautiful medieval city (probably one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in Europe) is definitely worth visiting, what with its charming cafes, museums of Flemish art and beautiful architecture. Bruges might not be large, yet its paved streets seem neverending.
Tallinn, Estonia
All of the Republic of Estonia is not exactly the most popular tourist destination in Europe, and while that’s not good for the country, it certainly makes your experience as a tourist far more interesting. Tallinn is like a well kept gem, known only to a select few. The historic attractions, the architecture and the city’s friendly and relaxed nightlife make the Estonian capital a must-visit.
Lviv, Ukraine
Ukraine in general is far too overlooked by tourists, and the beautiful city of Lviv even more so. The old town of Lviv is simply exquisite, with its cathedrals, cafes and shops is one of the most walkable old towns in Europe.
Lviv is still largely undiscovered, so if you can get past the infrastructure (which could be better), you will feel like a pioneer findig a treasure.

As one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Utrecht has naturally lots of historical attractions for the curious tourist. One of the main features of the city are the many canals, the largest and oldest of which is the Oudergracht (follow this canal for a self-guided tour of the old city). Utrecht is a beautiful city, with more spires than any other city in Europe.
