  • The most scenic ferry rides in the world

    Split

    Split

Ferries are just convenient ways of getting across water, especially if you’re with a car, right? While this is an incontestable truth, there just might be more to ferries than meet the eye. Ferry rides can actually be quite scenic, and although there probably aren’t many people who take ferry rides just for the fun of it, if you have no choice but take the ferry, then you might as well enjoy it and make the most of it.

But some ferry rides are simply too good to miss, and if they happen to be on (or near) your itinerary, then you should definitely hop on, kick back and stare in wonderment. Here are some of the most scenic ferry rides in the world.

Ferry from Split to Vis, Croatia

    Vis, Croatia

Croatia’s Dalmation coast is rapidly being acknowledged one of the most exciting destinations in Europe, and since many of the greatest destinations are offshore, there’s no avoiding ferry rides.

Not that anyone would want to avoid a ferry ride like the one between the charming historic town of Split, and magical Vis, the remotest inhabited island of Croatia.

Ferry from Staten Island to Manhattan, New York, USA

The iconic orange ferry is the daily means of transport of tens of thousand of commuters every day, but for someone who doesn’t have to make the trip daily, the ride from Staten Island to Manhattan is just amazing. Get a seat at the starboard to have a magnificent view of Ellis Island and the Liberty Statue, and let’s not forget the stunning Manhattan skyline.

Ferry from Sydney to Manly, Australia

    Sydney

Manly, a harbor suburb of Sydney’s, has a few sights up its sleeve, but it’s worth getting there even if only to see some of the best attractions in Sydney from afar.

The ferry ride allows you to get a good view of the famous Sydney Opera House, the Harbor Bridge and skyscrapers, as well as stately Victorian homes and lush gardens. If you’re lucky, you might even see some dolphins or whales nearby.

Ferry from Kowloon Peninsula to Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s sights usually cost a pretty penny, but this short and cheap ride is a great way to see some of the major sights of the city, albeit from afar. The ferry ride takes you from one sea of skyscrapers to another, and if you can arrange to go at dusk you will be rewarded with an incredible, dazzling view of this modern metropolis.

Kerala’s famous backwaters are always worth a look, and if you want to explore a bit of the many canals, rivers and rivulets, you have to do it by boat.

Ride the ferry from the town of Alleppey to the village of Pulinkunnu, and see the shores lined with coconut and banana trees, green fields and the marks of rural Indian life.
