As the seventh largest country on the planet, India has a a number of attractions befitting its size. Just like it’s next to impossible to visit all the essential parts of India in the course of one trip (unless you have a lot of time on your hands), it would be unimaginable to visit all of its major attractions in one go.

With twenty eight Unesco World Heritage Site and thousands of attractions that are just as interesting, you’ll have your work cut out for you if you are planning to visit even a fraction of them. So where to go when you are visiting India? Here are some of the most popular travel destinations in India, which will work as a great introduction to the wonders of the country for the first time visitor.

    Delhi

Delhi is thought to be one of the oldest cities in the world, over five millennia old. In addition to being the second largest city in India, it is also the country’s capital, and home to dozens of attractions worth seeing. Delhi is huge, and crowded at the best of times, but it is also the kind of city where even simply walking around feels like an adventure. Visit world famous attractions like the Red Fort, the Covered Bazaar, Lahore Gate and a vast number of palaces.

    Varanasi

Varanasi is the most sacred Hindu city in India, and a place of pilgrimage for thousands of people. As the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, Varanasi has no shortage of historical sites and monuments.

Dozens of temples are scattered throughout the city, and there are many buildings of great beauty, but Varanasi manages to showcase at the same time the best and worst of India, especially on the ghats (stairs) leading down to the river, where people pray, wash, perform funerals and dump garbage.

    Amritsar

The holy city of Amritsar in Punjab is as important to the Sikh as Varanasi to the Hindu, but the two cities couldn’t be more different. Amritsar reveals its beauty best at night, when the Golden Temple, the main attraction in the city, glows with thousands of lights.

The Golden Temple is usually filled with thousands of pilgrims, are dominated by a pretty cheerful atmosphere. Other sights in Amritsar include Summer Palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Jallianwala Bagh garden.

    Konark

Konark is only a small town in the state of Odisha, but it the site of two of the most striking sights in India: the Sun Temple and Ramchandi Temple River. The 13th century Sun Temple is a World Heritage Site, and although it is in ruins it is plain to see that it was built in the shape of a gigantic chariot with 24 wheels.

Ramchandi Temple might not be all that impressive from an architectural point of view, but it is a very important religious site with a lively beachfront.

    Puducherry

The small city of Puducherry (formerly known as Pondicherry) used to be the largest French colony in India, and today it is a quaint but pleasant mingle of Indian and French style architecture. Puducherry is not the kind of destination where you go in order to see a particular sight or do something special, it’s a place where you go simply to experience day to day life.
