  • The most interesting rural destinations in the world

    Coimbra

    Coimbra

Visiting big cities is a pleasure, especially if you’re usually looking forward to wandering through an interesting museum, relaxing in a cafe or walking in historic districts.

But when the bustle and crowds of cities is not what you want, you can always take a breather in the countryside, where everything seems to move at a slower pace, and where you can truly take the time to stop and smell the flowers. If you are planning on hiding away in the countryside for a while, here’s a list of the most interesting rural destinations in the world.

    Schist villages, Coimbra, Portugal

Near the town of Lousã in Coimbra district, there are several so-called schist villages, which have houses built of schist, a type of rock. These mountain villages have been restored in the past few years, and now are open for tourism.

The twenty four villages are very scenic, and many of the inhabitants are craftspeople, so there are lots of souvenirs to buy. The landscape around the villages is beautiful, and there are lots of walking and biking trails for visitors.

    Crete, Greece

As the largest island in the Greek archipelago, Crete has several big cities, but most of the island is made up of charming countryside. The mountains, gorges, rivers and plains make the landscape wonderfully varied, and there are countless picturesque little villages where you can stay.

    Madhya Pradesh, India

Madhya Pradesh is full of little known but inspiring rural destinations, and although the road might be rough and laborious, the rewards will be worth it. Whether they are surrounded by amazing natural scenery or they are home to some unique attractions, the villages of Madhya Pradesh attract a lot of tourism. You can rent a car and explore the countryside on your own, or take the train as a more affordable option.

    Massachusetts

Rural Massachusetts is full of bucolic charm, in spite of the ever present chain restaurants and fast foods. While many of the attractions of the state can be seen while you’re driving on the highway, some little villages and small towns have to be explored in detail in order to be fully appreciated.

Western Massachusetts in particular has lots of rural destinations that are not well known, but definitely picturesque.

    Taiwan

Although Taiwan is becoming more and more modernized by the day, a few decades ago the country’s economy was based on agriculture, and its rural past is still very much visible. In central Taiwan there are countless villages, and even farms that can be visited.

One of the most interesting rural areas in the country is Alishan National Scenic Area, where you can visit eight indigenous villages.
