  • The most exciting tourist attractions in Macau

    Macau city center

    Macau city center

Until 1999, Macau was a an overseas territory belonging to Portugal, but although it has changed hands, not much has changed about this huge city, and it is just as fun to visit as ever. Contrary to popular opinion, Las Vegas is not the best gambling destination in the world, Macau is.

But apart form that, Macau is a city with a long (and not always happy) history – it was the last European colony in Asia, and the old town makes you feel like you’re taking a walk through some European small town. There are lots of things to see both in the city and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, so here are the most exciting tourist attractions in Macau.

    Macau Tower

Macau Tower looms over the city at the height of 1,109 ft, and it has an impressive observation deck where you can find anything from restaurants, shopping malls, movie theaters and an amazing panoramic view. The most exciting thing you can do at the Tower is to go on the Skywalk X, a blood curdling (if you’re afraid of heights) tour of the outer rim of the tower’s deck. If you’re into bungee jumping, the Tower is a great place for some thrills – it is the second highest commercial bungee jump in the world.

    Macau Fisherman’s Wharf

This is not actually a wharf, but the first theme park in Macau, located on Macau Peninsula. The park has been in the works for 5 years, and it has quite a few rides and attractions that are different from the standard fare.

The most interesting attractions are Vulcania, a 40 foot replica mountain that ‘erupts’ every evening and which houses the Dragon Quest roller coaster ride.

    Coloane Village

Coloane Village on Coloane Island is a welcome respite from the bustle of the city. The village is small, sleepy and very picturesque. Colorful buildings line narrow lanes, there are several interesting shops that you can visit and there are a few very interesting historical attractions such as the public library, Tam Kong Temple, Sam Seng Temple and the Chapel of Saint Francis.

    Taipa Houses Museum

Taipa Island is mostly a (very pretty) residential area, but it has several interesting sights too. Taipa Houses Museum consists of a row of colonial buildings that have been restored to reflect the lifestyle and living conditions of the original inhabitants. The houses used to belong to rich Macanese officials and they are a pretty good indicator of the luxury that they lived in.

    Cotai

Cotai is a strip of reclaimed land between the two islands, which has been transformed into Macau’s own Vegas Strip. Cotai is chock full of some of the most expensive and luxurious casinos ever built (like the Venetia, which is one of the largest casinos in the world). Other than gambling, you can also do activities like go-carting or bowling in bowling centers of international standard.
