Riga

Latvia, one of the Baltic States, is one of those countries that are liberally sprinkles with tourist destinations, one more amazing than the other. Although fairly small and sparsely populated, there’s barely a square kilometer in Latvia that doesn’t have a nice spot, especially in the countryside and in the larger, old cities.

Exploring Latvia properly and seeing all of its interesting sites would take a long while, so if you’re visiting it for the first time, here are some of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Latvia.

Old Town, Riga

The old city center of Riga was acknowledged as a World Heritage Site due to its beautiful historic architecture, which the city is doing its best to preserve as much as possible. In addition to being a magnet for history buffs, Riga is also known for its exciting nightlife, which is considered to be one of the best in Europe.

The Old Town is full of attractions, some of which are free. Don’t miss out on the Porcelain Museum and the Sun Museum, two of the most unique museums in the country.

Jurmala

The resort town of Jurmala, not far from Riga, can boast of the longest beach in the northern parts of Europe. With its seemingly unending beaches with fine white sand, bordered by dunes and pine forests, Jurmala is a very attractive place for beach goers. One of the best things about Jurmala is that it is affordable for all budgets – you can find four star hotels as well as simple guesthouses and hostels.

Sigulda

Sigulda is nicknamed the Switzerland of Latvia, thanks to its location in a picturesque valley with steep cliffs. The town itself is very small, and most of its attractions fall in the way of any walking tour you might want to take through the town. There are lots of amazing sights just outside the town as well: Turaida Castle, Gutmanis cave, or Krimulda Palace and Ruins.

Ventspils

Ventspils is not only an extremely busy port city (you can spend many hours on the quays looking at incoming or outgoing ships if you like ‘maritime sights’), but it is also the flower capital of Latvia.

The whole city is engulfed in blooms from spring to late autumn. Check out the Livonian Order Castle, one of the oldest medieval fortresses in Latvia, and the Seaside Open Air Museum.

Liepaja

This small gem of a city is with a lot to attract visitors. It has some of the most unspoiled beaches in Latvia, with amazingly white sand, fantastic old town feel (old wooden buildings are scattered throughout the city), and even a former secret Soviet military town, Karosta,  the northern part of the city.
