  • The most amazing port cities in the world

    Port Elizabeth

    Port Elizabeth

Nice fresh sea air, a beautiful view of the harbor, fresh fish at the market every day and long walks on the beach…people who live in port cities definitely have a lot to be happy about. For millenia, port cities were the hubs of commerce, arts and civilization, because back when people had to rely on non-motorized means of transport, traveling by boat was the fastest way to get to a faraway destination.

Port might be slightly less important nowadays, but from a touristic point of view, they tend to be fascinating places. So here are some of the most amazing port cities in the world.

    Himeji, Japan

Himeji, in Hyogo prefecture, was known in the past as a castle town, and the beautiful Himeji Castle that is the city’s most famous attraction is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

In addition to the castle (which is in reparation until 2015, but only small parts of it will be closed at a time), there are some other great sights in the city: Engyo-ji Temple (one of the most beautiful in Japan, and the filming location for The Last Samurai), Kokoen Gardens, and Senhime Shrine, which has a beautiful view of the castle.

    Trincomalee, Sri Lanka

Trincomalee is located on a small peninsula, so it has an inner bay and an outer bay, and it is one of the largest centers of Tamil culture in the country. The beautiful beaches of Trincomalee  are great for scuba diving, surfing and whale watching.

There are several interesting attractions in the city, like the Dutch Fort, the beautiful Hindu temple of Koneswaram, and Seruwila Temple, a religious site of great significance for Buddhists.

    Gdansk, Poland

Poland has no lack of beautiful cities, and Gda?sk is definitely one of the prettiest port cities in Europe. The old town of Gda?sk is rich in historical and cultural attractions, for example Long Street and Long Market, the old city hall and the Mot?awa River bank. In summer, you can swim in the sea at Stogi beach, but considering that it is the Baltic Sea, the water can be quite cold.

    Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Port ELizabeth, nicknamed the Friendly City, is one of the largest cities in South Africa, and a major sea port. It is also considered to be South Africa’s watersport capital, so you can scuba dive and surf to your heart’s content.

The city is also a good spot for game viewing – there are several private game reserves in the area, plus the Addo Elephant National Park.

    Guayaquil, Ecuador

The largest city in Ecuador might be overly hot sometimes, but it is a place where visitors are always welcomed with open arms and there’s always plenty to do. There are several tourist attractions in the city (parks, museums, historical buildings), and there are lots of excellent seafood restaurants.
