The world is full of amazing structures made by humans, but possibly the most astounding are those created with the purpose of commemorating or honoring a person or an event. Since ancient times, monuments have been erected every time that people felt the need to celebrate or to mourn something, so it’s no surprise that usually the most impressive buildings on the planet are monuments.
When visiting a new place, it’s always a good idea to take a look at the monuments you can find there, because it can give you a feel of what the place is like, and of its past, so here are some of the most amazing monuments in the world, in case you happen to be traveling anywhere near them.
Ushiku Daibutsu, Ushiku, Japan
This gigantic Buddha statues, built in 1993, is one of the tallest, and most impressive monuments in the world. The bronze plated statue is 120 meters tall, and it represents the Amitabha Budha in his classic pose. You can see the statue up close from a platform that can lift you up to 85 meters – and you’ll also get a good view of the surroundings. Inside the statue, there is a four-story museum.
Mother Motherland, Kiev, Ukraine

The statue of the motherland is the best known monument in the entire Ukraine, and it serves as a commemoration of the Second World War. The huge statue is visible from a distance, and it represents a woman with her sword drawn and a shield with the emblem of the Soviet Union.
The statue is 62 meters high and is placed on top of a museum, so the overall height of the monument it 102 meters.
Guan Yin, Sanya, China
Guan Yin of the South Sea of Sanya, the bodhisattva of mercy is a statue of 108 meters, one face of which faces the South China Sea, while the other faces inland. The statue is 108 meters high and it took eight years to build. Currently, the statues of Guan Yin is the fourth tallest monument in the world.
