The best travel destinations you’ve (probably) never heard of
With modern maps, travel brochures and agencies and even travel websites, it might seem like there is hardly a patch of the planet that we haven’t heard of. But naturally, there are lots of travel destinations that you seldom hear about, even if they are just as attractive prospects as any popular vacation spot.
Backpackers might know about the, but regular travelers might still be unaware of the existence of some spectacular destinations that definitely deserve (and probably will get) more attention. So if you want to go somewhere new and exciting, here are some of the best travel destinations you’ve (probably) never heard of.
Isla Holbox, Mexico
With Mexico’s coast slowly turning into one giant beach resort, it’s not easy to find a place where you can feel like you’ve managed to escape the crowds. One such place is Isla Holbox, a tiny island that’s only 26 mile long, whose name it very fitting (it means ‘black hole’ in Mayan).
The island is not motorized, through you can use mopeds, and quite far from the crowded destinations – 3 hours from Cancun and a ferry ride.
Jericoacoara, Brazil
Jericoacoara is at the end of a rather long journey if you’re departure is in one of the popular Brazilian cities, but the bumpy trip is more than worth the trouble. Jericoacoara, affectionately called Jeri, is a beach paradise which, for some reason, hasn’t been overrun by crowds yet. Do some kitesurfing, windsurfing, or learn capoeira from the locals.
Thingvellir National Park, Iceland
The whole of Iceland is a not exactly an immensely popular travel destination, but Thingvellir National Park is definitely one of the best and most visited attractions in the country.
Thingvellir is is quite important in Icelandic history (it was there that the first known parliament in the world was formed in 950 CE), and it has a great natural beauty due to its many volcanoes, gorges and valleys.
Symi, Greece
Symi is hardly the centerpiece of any tourist brochure on Greece, but it is in fact one of the most beautiful islands in Greece. First known for its sponge-fishing, and then for its wine-making, Symi is a rich island and its wealth is reflected in its largest town, called Symi, as well as other smaller localities. Visit during the summer and catch the spectacular Symi festival, from July till September.
