  • The best surf festivals in the world

    Gold Coast

    Gold Coast

Surfing might not look like it, but it is a pretty old sport, dating back to at least the 18th century, when Europeans first learned about it. In Polynesia, people have been surfing for centuries, and in ancient Hawaii, surfing was more than a sport, it was an art and part of culture.

Today, surfing is enjoyed by millions of people, and not even only by the lucky ones who live near a beach. It’s only natural that there should be festivals to celebrate this sport, and they are not as unusual as one might think. So if you would like to share your love of surfing with other like minded people, here are some of the best surf festivals in the world.

    Relentless Boardmasters, Cornwall, UK

Relentless Boardmasters is the biggest surfing, skating and music even in the UK, with over 100 music acts, several stages, and more surf boards than blades of grass.

Fistral Beach, where the even takes place, turns into a surfer’s paradise, where not only skills are displayed and honed, but boards admired and tips exchanged. Of course, there’s plenty of drinks, food and festival atmosphere as well.

    San Miguel Pro, Zarautz, Spain

Zarautz is one of the most popular surf towns in Spain, so it’s only natural that the most exciting surfing event in the country takes place there. World class surfers take part in the event, and there is plenty of space on the sandy beach to watch their performance together with the locals. Each night there are music events, so there’s not time to get bored.

Cosmic Creek Surf Festival, Salt Creek, California

Salt Creek is a year round destination for surfers, but one of the most exciting surfing events of the year takes place in October. Cosmic Creek Festival is a mix of music festival/ surf stomp/charity event, and the surfing that you’ll see there is both classic and unique, usually paying homage to earlier ‘golden ages’ of surfing.

Surfers Paradise Festival, Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia

Surfers Paradise is a suburb on Queensland’s Gold Coast, and with a name like this it’s not surprising that there is a phenomenal surfing festival taking place in the city.

Surfers Paradise Festival takes place on a wide beach, on the backdrop of dozens of sky-scrapers, and tries to showcase the best talents of the surfing community not only in Australia, but also in the entire world. More than a simple surfing festival, it is a festival of music, lifestyle, music, art and food.
