  • The best spots in the world to learn how to surf

There’s evidence that suggests that surfing might be one of the oldest sports on the planet, and the idea of riding the waves has likely come up when humans first started swimming in the ocean. Historians of surfing are not in agreement yet whether surfing was invented in Peru or Hawaii, but the bottom line is that surfing is old.

People have been learning how to surf for millennia, but that doesn’t mean that surfing is a piece of cake. Surf breaks can differ radically, and trying to get down the basics at the wrong break will be difficult, and will probably make you a nuisance for experienced surfers. If you want to know which are the best places to start, here are the best spots in the world to learn how to surf.

    Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia

Kuta Beach is a pretty popular surfing destination in Indonesia, as demonstrated by the huge number of stands where you can rent boards. Kuta Beach also has one of the best surfing schools in Indonesia, established by world champion Cheyne Horan, who can teach you all the tricks of the sport.

Besides, if you don’t manage to stand up on the board by the end of the first lesson, you will get a second lesson for free. After mastering the basics, you can get some great surfing kits at the shops on Kuta.

    Nosara Beach, Costa Rica

The better known breaks in Costa Rica are swarming with surfers and swimmers, so understandably they are not the most comfortable place for a beginner. But luckily, Safari Surf School has set up a center off the beaten path, on the deserted Nosara Beach where the quiet is broken only by the occasional howler monkey.

    Byron Bay, Australia

Byron Bay, with its variety of different beaches, is possibly the best place to learn how to surf in Australia. The town itself has become somewhat of a hippie surfer paradise, but while the pros as riding the dangerous waves, beginners can stick to the gentle swells of Watego Beach. Byron Bay Surf School is a good place to learn the basic techniques.

    Lagos, Portugal

The waves on the beaches around Lagos are not exactly what you’d call spectacular, but they are just the right thing for someone who is new to surfing.

Several surf schools in the area have set up bases in Lagos, because there is a great variety of waves and breaks to choose from, all within 30 minutes of Lagos. Lagos is a great place for beginners not only because it has several schools to choose from, but also because you will need the nightlife and the restaurants of the city to relax after a day of hard training.

    Bundoran, Co Donegal, Ireland

The weather might not be sunny all the time, but Ireland is quickly becoming one of Europe’s newest surfing hotspots. The surfing spots are world class but not too crowded yet, and there are several beaches to choose from, like Tullan Beach and Rossnowlagh Beach among others. The Bundoran Surf school is a well-respected institution, and it offers surf lessons as well as learning packages.
