  • The best rock climbing destinations in the world

Rock climbing can be a very rewarding and incredibly exciting hobby, provided that you are not afraid of heights, and you have some good muscles for clinging precariously on hundred foot tall rock walls and dangling into huge drops. If you are one of those people who likes to live on the edge, you should give rock climbing a chance, especially since it is one of those extreme sports that give you ample opportunity to visit some of the most interesting places on the planet.

The wealth of mountains, canyons and other jutting or dropping forms of relief that we can find all over the globe, there is no shortage of walls to climb on, and here are some of the best rock climbing destinations in the world.

    Dead Horse Point, Utah

This quaintly named area around the Colorado was used as a horse corral by 18th century cowboys, who eventually abandoned the place as well as their horses, who died in the corral. Despite the dreary history, Dead Horse Point State Park is absolutely astounding – a desert plateau surrounded by 2000 foot cliffs.

    Agulha do Diabo, Brazil

Agulha do Diabo, or the Devil’s Needle, is a unique rock formation in Brazil’s Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos that even the most experienced rock climbers can find a bit difficult. But if you manage to make your way to the top of the 2050 foot tall cliff, you will be rewarded with one of the most incredible views on the planet.

    Paarl Rock, Paarl, South Africa

The city of Paarl in the Western Cape is notable for its proximity to a very unusual rock formation that some people see as South Africa’s version of Uluru.

Paarl Rock is a granite formation that’s smooth and rounded and rather difficult to climb. Paarl Rock is one of the largest granite outcrops in the world, and a real challenge to rock climbers.

    Wharepapa region, New Zealand

The region around the river Wharepapa in New Zealand’s North Island has so many great rock climbing spots that it would take ages to climb all of them. Most of the rocks in Wharepapa don’t exceed 100 feet, but these crags and cliff faces have more than enough unusually shaped rocks to make your climb and interesting and challenging one.

    Kalymnos, Greece

The island of Kalymnos is an all round great holiday destination, with amazing rock climbing spots scattered all over the island. Most of the routes are located near the villages of Myrties, Masouri and Armeos, but overall there are more climbing routes on Kalymnos than anywhere else in the world.
