The best desert destinations in the world
You wouldn’t think that anyone would willingly build a city in such an inhospitable place as a desert, but there are so many desert cities in the world that there’s obviously more than a little appeal in living surrounded by sand and sun.
If you like warm weather, or even better, scorching heat, there are several desert destinations that will fulfill your need for dryness and heat. So here are some of the best desert destinations in the world.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Vegas is the best known desert city in the world – who hasn’t heard of it? Of course, when you’re strolling on the Strip, it’s not really obvious that you are actually in the middle of the arid desert floor of Clark County.
There is enough heat in Vegas to last you for years, and if you head out of the city, you will also encounter more than a fair share of desert fauna and vegetation, plus the obligatory dose of dust, sand and cacti.
Four Corners, Nevada
Four Corners is everything that Las Vegas is not. You won’t see any neon lights, any palm-fringed avenues, casinos or upscale restaurants. In Four Corners, life itself seems to have taken the backseat. This astounding region is life a jouney back in time to the golden age of the Wild West in many respects.
There are several national monuments that you can see, but if you want to stay away from civilization and enjoy nature, you can do that as well.
Casablanca, Morocco
To the frank, Casablanca doesn’t have as much historical charm as Marrakesh, and some people might consider it way too industrial, but let’s not forget about Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart whose names are associated with the city, at least for the fans of the film. Casablanca has enough historical buildings to satisfy a tourist, and plenty of modern attractions as well.
Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt
Sharm El Sheikh is a well known resort town on the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, on the shores of the Red Sea. Although it is visited by thousands of tourists, most people prefer lying on the beach, which means that if you want to do other things, you won’t have to confront any huge crowds.
Sharm El Sheikh has some great scuba diving spots, and even explore the arid rocks of the Sinai Mountains, or take a quick look at the strip of desert separating the mountains from the sea.

Fans of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade won’t need much convincing to visit this destination, but even the regular tourist will be amazed by the beauty of this rosy city carved into stone, that some say is ‘half as old as time’.
The archaeological park of Petra is worth several hours of exploration, and there are several astounding hiking trails around Petra as well, for those who can’t get enough of it.
